Services Provided
Eligibility for legal assistance services is limited at Fort Wainwright. Legal assistance services are available according to the priority of need set forth by Department of Defense regulation. Currently, only active duty personnel and their family members are authorized to receive services. Ideally, the following personnel should be in need of legal services before making an appointment with the legal office: (1) Active duty personnel within 30 days of signing in; (2) Retiring personnel required to sign Assumption of Obligations (DD Form 139) in conjunction with final clearance; (3) Service members who desire to draft wills and living wills, or to obtain a notary; (4) Service members and family members who are victims of domestic violence and seeking temporary restraining order; and (5) Service members who are potential plaintiffs in a claim necessary to preserve the right to submit an application for relief (such as a traveling accident) under 31 USC 3702. Appointments for notaries and proxies represent lower priorities under DoD regulation. Therefore, although it is recommended that you call ahead, service members who need notaries or proxies will receive them upon visiting the legal office during "walk-in" hours. First time walk-ins will be seen, however, it is recommended to arrive early to ensure full and prompt acceptance of walk-in patrons who have an appointment (appointments are seen first, followed by "urgent" walk-in patrons and then by all other walk-ins).
